Known for his larger than life films Yash Johar was one of the counting figures of Bollywood. Born in Amritsar, Punjab he was founder of Dharma Productions that saw making of many cult movies like Agneepath, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham etc. Married to Hiroo Yash Johar, he was father of noted actor-director Karan Johar.
Recently while making "Dilwale" filmmaker Karan Johar became nostalgic when he shared a snap of his father Yash Johar with Shah Rukh Khan and called it "memories forever". Karan took to Twitter to share the picture where his late father is holding the hand of the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai star.
"Papa and @iamsrk....#memoriesforever," he captioned the pic.
Though Yash Johar died on June 26, 2004 he seems to be a guiding force to his son and successor Karan Johar. Even today Karan remembers the beautiful moments he shared with his dad.
Personal Life
The founder of Dharma Productions was born on September 6, 1929 in Amritsar, Punjab, British India. He was married to Hiroo Yash Johar. The beautiful couple were blessed with a baby boy whom they named Karan. The son just as his father is a man of many talents and a towering name in Bollywood. Johar died on June 26, 2004 at the age of 74 due to acute chest congestion in Mumbai. He was noted for showcasing Indian tradition and was remembered as one of the biggest names in the Indian cinema.
Professional Life
It is hard to believe how a person like Yash Johar hailing from a middle class family in Amritsar Punjab moved to Mumbai and soon became one of the counting figures of Bollywood. He made a mark in the film industry with number of cult movies like Dostana, Agneepath, Gumrah and Duplicate under his Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd.The apt understanding of the real and reel life was one of the main reasons for the success of his films. Yash Johar gained lot of experience while working with many noted celebrities of his time. Beginning his career in 1952 with Sunil Dutt's production house Ajanta Arts he was associated with films like Mujhe Jeene Do and Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke. He was instrumental in assisting filmmaker Dev Anand in handling production of his films Guide, Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari and Hare Rama Hare Krishna made under the banner of Navketan Films. After much experience and acumen he founded his own banner Dharma Productions in 1976 which produced Dostana directed by Raj Khosla. The film was a huge box office success brings the potential of Yash Johar in forefront. The production house in years to come saw major releases like Agneepath, Gumrah , Duplicate, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. A man of many talents and very helpful by nature he also assisted in the production and distribution of Dreamz Unlimited company founded in 1999 by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Aziz Mirza. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was one of the first releases of this production house. At later years of his life he confined himself to his home production house and the last film that he oversaw as producer was Kal Ho Naa Ho which was a critical and commercial success, becoming the second top-grossing movie domestically and the top-grossing Bollywood film in the overseas market that year.
